Peer Support essential care can relieve the overburdended care system

Peer Support saves lives. In-person services, and virtual services (by phone/device/internet) for those who need encouragement to healthcare support for treatment of mental health issues, substance abuse issues, and violence are needed now more than ever as new research on the effect of the pandemic and statistics on Canadians are released, shock as news headlines, and continue to burnout frontline workers.

The largest increase of deaths due to the opioid epidemic has been within the homeless community in Ontario, where post traumatic stress disorder and illnesses such as physophrenia are also present among service users. Peer Supporters are deeply trauma informed to engage with Clients and encourage treatment, accompany Peers to Clinics and Medical services to overcome access barriers present there.

Recovery-based employment essentials training for Peers intersted in supporting their community in harm reduction and recovery, exiting violence and victimization, overcoming homelessness and oppression, and mental health unwellness is accessible and ongoing at Mentor/Mentee Canada. Peer Supporters are trained to begin a Peer Program and to lead mutual-learning group Peer Support.

Training is available for organizations to provide to their Clients and grow an empowered client community - and become developmental, employment organizations.

Peer Support training itself motivates ongoing, life long recovery, and prepares Clients for successful transition into Peer Support Employment. The training is transferable for personal and professional wellness with demonstrated success results.

Peer Support and Peer Mentoring fills in the gaps by complimenting case management and counselling to meet the needs of communities, organizations, and front line workers.  It is the accessible high value/low cost solution for Canada to support and accelerate wellness by serving all streams, diverse sectors, and the principles of Housing First and community from youth to adult. Together we can create the capacity and conditions to better meet needs and goals at home and across Canada.
